This bell served aboard the S.S. Cape May from 1943-1969, and saw action in Europe during World War II. Follwing the war, the bell, ship & crew served in peacetime commerce.
In 1974 the bell was presented to the city of Cape May by the U.S. Maritime Administration, and now resides near the NE end of the Washington Street Mall - where it is greeted by thousands of visitors a year.
