The former lookout Billys Peak is a short steep hike of about three miles from the trailhead. The trailhead can be found by turning at the sign just north of Trinity River Campground on Highway #3. There’s a locked gate from end of October to end of April.
One of the tougher three mile hikes in the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area with a vertical gain of over three thousand feet, it takes about 2 and half hours of hiking time. In 2007, the trail was disappearing in many places from thick brush. Near the summit, loose rock, no water and no shade add spice to the challenge.
The view from the summit will explain why there was once a lookout here. Magnificent in all directions. Look close on a clear day and you can scan from Mt. McLaughlin in the north to the Yolla Bollys south. Mt. Shasta dominates to one side, the crest of the high Trinity Alps to the other. Write what you think/see/feel in the ammo box summit register.
Evidence remains of the fire lookout in the form of tangle wire and a pile of rusting cans from the 1970s dismantling. Six concrete blocks mark the footings of the former lookout.
Altitude in Feet: 7274
