The Circleville Pumpkin Show has been occuring in downtown Circleville, Ohio since 1903. It was started by then Circleville Mayor George Haswell. He had an idea that it would be good to get the country folks and city folks together so he invited the country folks to bring the best of their produce to town so that the city folks could appreciate their efforts. The festival now features several parades each day, free entertainment, and just about every kind of pumpkin food you can imagine.
Each year there are about 100,000 pounds of pumpkins on display. This year's largest pumpkin weighed in at a whopping 1524.5 pounds. In addition to all of the pumpkins on display and for sale there are many other forms of entertainment. The festival takes over 12 city blocks. Here you can find live bands, rides, egg tosses, parades, big wheel races, hog calling, and of course, pie eating. The main attraction for most is the wide variety of pumpkin based foods. This year I saw pumpkin burgers, pies, cookies, chili, donuts, ice cream, cake, taffy, cream puffs, fudge, ice cream, milkshakes, waffles, pizza, and many others I'm probably forgetting.
The festival is world known. It has been features on or in Japanese television, German newspapers, National Geographic, Stars and Stripes, NBC's Today Show, and many other major publications.
Even after all these years, and all the entertainment available the festival remains "The Greatest FREE Show on Earth." There is no admission to get into the festival, and visitors are not required to spend a cent on anything if they don't wish. The only cost is for food and beverages, souvenirs and crafts, and the rides.
