Long Description:I’m waymarking the famous (well around Olympia anyway) artesian well in a parking lot in downtown Olympia. It had been inside a grocery store before the building was torn down and a parking lot put on the site. The well was preserved and is a popular spot for locals to fill water jugs in the downtown area. In researching the well, I read how a local community collage did a 24-hour survey of this well and found that several hundred people visited it in that short period of time. I stopped by some months ago, on my way through town and found one gentleman filling a couple of bottles of water, as well as several youths just hanging around and wetting their hair on a hot afternoon. When I drove up and asked, “Is this the famous artesian well?” The older gentleman acknowledged that it was and began giving me a little history of it.
I have since found out that there were numerous others in the area, but most are either capped, lost or in the basements or back rooms of local businesses. Those are often plumbed directly to the sewer or storm water systems. A bar across the street from here is an appearant exception it has a sign proclaiming, “We serve artesian well water”.
Then there is The former Olympia brewing company, about two and a half miles south of here. Their famous old advertising slogan was “It’s the water”, and they should know, the brewery was served by 26 artesian wells. It is now part of the Miller Brewing Company, but the brewery has been idle for some time now and is being considered as a botteled water facility. For more info on this waymark well, see... (
