John P. McVean, sometimes spelled McVeane, was from Toronto, Canada and joined the 49th New York Infantry at Buffalo August 21, 1861 at the age of 18. He served as Sargeant twice, Corporal, and then was promoted to Second Lieutenant October 16, 1863. McVean earned his Medal of Honor at Fredericksburg, VA at the Second Battle of Fredericksburg on May 4 1863. His citation reads: "Shot a Confederate color bearer and seized the flag; also approached, alone, a barn between the lines and demanded and received the surrender of a number of the enemy therein."
