Fort Pillow is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fort Pillow was orginally built by Confederate forces to guard the Mississippi River. After the fall of Fort Donalson and Columbus, Kentucky, Confederate forces retreated and the fort was taken over by United States forces.
In April of 1864, forces under the command of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked the fought and defeated the Union garrison.
