During the last Ice Age, Michigan was covered with glaciers up to 2 miles thick. One lobe of the glacial ice advanced from the southeast. When it stalled near Ann Arbor, the melting ice deposited large ridges or 'end moraines', creating the hills around the city. Later, as the glacier retreated it laid down a flat "ground moraine" of unsorted sand, gravel and clay or 'till' that you see on the slopes before you.
