Across the street from young Sam Clemens house lived Laura Hawkins. She was Sam’s childhood sweetheart and, some years later, became immortalized in print as Tom Sawyer’s sweetheart, Becky Thatcher. Many of Tom Sawyer’s adventures are believed to be partly from Sam Clemens boyhood in the town of Hannibal, MO.
Samuel Clemens used a penname when he published his new book. The pen name came from a river term meaning two fathoms (12 Ft.), which was a safe river depth for riverboats. The river term and the pen name is Mark Twain.
