The State Historical Museum of Russia is located at the north end of Red Square.

This massive, ornate, red brick building, an example of Russian revival style architecture dominates the north end of Red square. It was designed by Vladimir Sherwood and was constructed in the late 19th century, opening officially in 1894.
During the soviet area interior murals were painted over and much of the interior was damaged. The museum was closed from 1986 to 1987 and extensively renovated. It contains over four million exhibits covering Russian history from the stone age to the present.
