J.D. McCampbell, a blacksmith and carpenter, built the church in 115 days for $115. There were far fewer Methodists in Cades Cove (located in the Great Smokey Mountains) than Baptists but enough to establish this church in the 1820s. That building lasted until this one was built in 1902. Another Methodist Church broke off from this one and started on the other side of the Cove but this is the only one still standing. The cemetery includes the grave of Arthur Randolph Shields, author of "The Cades Cove Story" and veterans of every war.
