The Siege Lifted
On Aug. 26th, 1864. After 35 days of futile siege operations,
the Federals withdrew from their lines North and West of
Atlanta,and a wide flanking march, moved against the two
railroad entering the city from the southwest.
The 15th, 16th and 17th corp. Army of the Tenn., began
their march on the old Lick Skillet Road. Their objectives
were the West Point RR. at Shadnor Ch. and Fairburn and Macon RR.
(now the Central of Georgia), at Jonesboro.
The 4th , (from N. of the city), the 14th and 23rd ( from upper
Utoy Creek valley), followed other routes. The 20th withdrew
to Chattahoochee River crossing to guard communications.
