In the utterly charming William Wyler film, "Roman Holiday" (1953), Gregory Peck frightens Audrey Hepburn when he inserts his hand in "The Mouth of Truth" La Bocca della Verità (N 41° 53.291 E 012° 28.886).

Legend is if you are given to lying, you put your hand in there, it will be bitten off. When Gregory Peck pulls his arm out, he pretends that his hand is missing hinting that he is not a truth teller which he is not.

La Bocca della Verità, “the Mouth of Truth” is a renowned image, carved from Pavonazzetto marble, of a man-like face and located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, Italy. The sculpture is thought to be part of an ancient Roman fountain, or perhaps a manhole cover, portraying one of several possible pagan gods.

According to Wikipedia, electronic coin-operated reproductions of the Mouth are found in fairgrounds of Spain and Hungary. There is a similar sculpture of a lion in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India which according to local lore bites off one's hand if a lie is told.

I was quite surprised to find "The Mouth of Truth" La Bocca della Verità in Piazza Italia at 1129 NW Johnson Street in the Pearl District of downtown Portland, Oregon!
