The City of Caldwell was established as an Oregon Short Line town site by Robert Strahorn. The original depot was one of the first public buildings to be constructed as railroad construction reached the city in September of 1883. The current depot was constructed in 1906 at a cost of about $40,000. This historic structure sits at the core of downtown Caldwell, and is a significant place, both geographically and historically, in relation to both past and present transportation.
The building is one of the most significant historical buildings remaining in Caldwell and is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is owned by the City of Caldwell which has a long-term lease on the land with Union Pacific Railroad. The Depot has been utilized for community events since all railroad service ended in the 1980’s and has remained an important part of city civic and social life. It serves as a visible reminder of Caldwell’s ties to railroad history. The restored depot was dedicated Oct. 28, 2006.
The neat thing about the restoration is they kept the exterior intact - if you take a close look at the bricks, you will see signatures & notes from people that passed through here. It is utterly amazing that this is still viewable to this day!
