In 1956 on the campus of Arkansas State College, the Veterans Club was started by
Korean War veterans coming home and entering college under the GI Bill. The club functioned much like a fraternity, sponsoring a blood bank, joining in various campus beautification projects, competing in intramurals, holding a dance in December and electing a sweetheart. The campus had four fraternities at the time. Within a short time, though, the number of veterans coming to campus was declining, and a committee was formed to look into the possibility of joining a national fraternity.

In 1958 dean of students Robert Moore phones Lambda Chi Alpha Executive Director Cyril F. "Duke" Flad to tell him that the Veterans club was looking to affiliate with a national fraternity. George W. Spasyk was then dispatched from Lambda Chi Alpha Headquarters to meet with the Veterans Club. During Spasyk’s visit, he recommended that Arkansas State be installed as a colony. Arkansas State’s first initiation occurred in the basement of the Huntington Methodist Church by the chapter from Mississippi State. Arkansas State had one of the shortest colonization periods, receiving their Charter on April 25, 1959.

The Iota Theta Chapter moved into the basement of Danner Hall where they conducted their business and Initiations there until the completion of the fraternity house. In the year of 1984 Iota Theta Zeta moved into second fraternity house on campus and it was located on Robinson Road. The fraternity house suffered extreme storm damage in 1991 and 1999 when the roof was blown off both times. It underwent a complete renovation in the Fall of 1999 and was ready for use again in 2000. After almost 20 years of having a gravel parking lot, the parking lot was paved in the Spring of 2001. With 45 years of existence on campus, Iota Theta Zeta has initiated 1269 members.
