The Roman obelisk is devoid of inscriptions. The red granite of which it is made is thought to come from Asia minor. It was originally erected under the Roman emperor Constantine in the 4th century in the center of the "spina" of the circus of Arles (part of which can still be seen near the archeology museum). After the Roman era, it was abandonned and fell down or was toppled and broke into two parts. It was rediscovered in 1389. Louis XIV had it placed at its present position in front of the town hall.
