Originally built to bring construction materials to the Illinois & Michigan Canal project, it quickly became main business district for Lockport, IL, as it is today.

As the Illinois and Michigan Canal was being constructed (1836-1848), Archer Road was built to transport materials.
The original business district had grown up along Commerce Street next to the public landing on the bank of the canal. When two railroad lines began operating next to the street, the area
became too noisy, dirty and dangerous to serve as a business district.
Today, Archer Avenue/State Street continues to serve as Lockport's business district.
