Davis, along with a few members of his cabinet and several Confederate generals, was on his way south after the fall of Richmond and hoped to rally support. Although Davis still clung to the hope of military success, he was persuaded by subordinates that further resistance was futile, and the war was over.

Driving Directions: From I-26 east or west, take exit 54; take South Carolina Highway 72, 3 miles west to Clinton, 24 miles southwest to Greenwood, and 14 miles west to Abbeville. Turn right onto South Main Street, travel around square, and follow signs on North Main Street to house. From I-85 take exit 27; then take South Carolina Highway 81 south to Anderson; South Carolina Highway 28, 30 miles to Abbeville. South Carolina Highway becomes North Main Street in Abbeville; follow signs on North Main Street to house.
