The sign says:

"Thomas Dexter began building gristmills on this site in 1637. The mill you see here started operating in about 1654. The early settlers of Sandwich brought their corn to "The Grist Mill" to be ground into meal, their most important food. You will see the old machinery, with its wooden gears in full operation, grinding corn. Freshly ground meal from the mill, including recipes used by the original families of Sandwich, can be purchased.

"Mill and Site Restored in 1961."

The mill is located along a brook at the end of a narrow pond, across the street from the Sandwich Glass Museum and across from a white church.

The mill is open at least on Saturdays during the summer months.

The tour is worth taking. The guides are not only informative and show, in detail, how the corn is ground, they are entertaining as well and provide colorful stories.
