WHEELER'S RAID 2A 18
October 2, 1863

This road, then part of the Anderson Turnpike, was used by Federal wagon trains between the base at Bridgeport, Ala., and the besieged army in Chattanooga. West of here, Maj.Gen. Joseph Wheeler, raiding northwestward with his calvary, intercepted a train, estimated from 800 to 1,000 wagons, burned it and captured a number of mules.
