Born in Happy Valley, Carter county, 1850: attorney; U.S. Congressman, 1879-1881; newspaper publisher; federa pension agent; Governor of Tennessee, 1887-1891, 1896-1899; lecturer; U.S. Senator, 1907 until his death in 1912; buried in Johnson City. In the gubernatorial campaign of 1886 he, a Democrat, was opposed by his brother Alfred A. Taylor, a Republican, in Tennessee's celebrated "War of the Roses."
