The theater formed an architectural unity with the sanctuary called "du Cigonier". The cavea's three flights of tiers could accomodate about 9000 spectators for spectacles of comedy, tragedy, dance, popular festivals, as well as religious feasts. A niche with a consecrated fountain illustrated this religious function. The actors performed on the stage of wooden platform at the foot of the stage's wall. The orchestra received the choruses, dancers and the processions. Two vaulted corridors gave access to the orchestra and the places of honour at the first tiers. The public reached the tiers through the vomitoriums, internal radial passages and stairs, opening to horizontal promenade galleries. The building was constructed in the 2nd century A.D. partially against the terrain. The exterior was ornamented with an architectural motive of superimposed arches. The theater had been exploited as a quarry until the end of the 19th century.
