This bridge was erected in 1913 by the Edwards Construction Co. the street was then known as Lafeyette. This bridge replaced the first wooden bascule bridge (a drawbridge with a counterweight that continuously balances the span, or "leaf," throughout the entire upward swing in providing clearance for boat traffic)that was built at this crossing. The bridge was later modified to today's appearance in the mid 1900s.
