The bridge is listed as an ancient monument, built in the 13th century it is former ancient parish boundary marker between the parishes of Walkhampton, Sampford Spiney, Whitchurch and Buckland Monachorum, there is a stone in the centre of the bridge on the down stream side of the road with an incised cross that marks the point where the parishes used to meet.
