There are multiple places within the zoo where butterflies (often as well as birds) are allowed to fly free within a building, with tropical plants, a controlled environment.

The main place to see is the Malayan Woods Paviliion in "Indo-Malasia" where they have many types of butterflies, a posting of the different types kept in the housing, and life stage display complete with multiple incubating cocoons.
