The original Kazan Cathedral was built in 1636 to commemorate a victory over the Poles and Lithuanians in 1612. The Cathedral housed the Icon of the Kazan Virgin which accompanied Prince Dimitriy Pozharskiy when he led the campaign against the invading forces. The Icon, one of the most venerated religious objects in Russia was stolen in 1904 and was presumed destroyed.
In 1936 Joseph Stalin ordered Red Square cleared of churches and the Kazan Cathedral was destroyed. A few years earlier Architect Peter Baranovsky (who is credited with saving St Basil's Cathedral) had supervised renovation of the Kazan Cathedral to return it to the original design. His detailed plans and photographs were used for the reconstruction of the Cathedral in the early 1990s. It was re-consecrated in 1993 and now houses a copy of the Kazan Icon.
