Since 1876, 90 officers have died in the line of duty in Alberta. Their names are etched in black replicas of peace doves attached to the pillar.
A flame burns continuously at the top of the pillar.

As part of the ceremony, Solicitor General Harvey Cenaiko gave family members who attended a bronze peace dove with an officer's name, agency, and the year of death.

The pillar will become the site of the annual Alberta Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Day ceremony, which takes place on the last Sunday of September.
