This is THE REAL origin of the Shenango River; it is not the outflow of the Pymatuning Dam as many may believe.

This source of a great Western PA river is in the Pymatuning Swamp along the great resource of the State Gamelands Trail. Follow the trail north from RT. 322 at Hartstown with your vehicle until you reach the Gameland parking area. Then it is perhaps a half mile hike to the source, which is right under the trail. It is under the trail because on the east side of the path the swamp lake drains out through a man made culvert, creating the current origin. The water is draining right at the former site of the Erie Extension Canal. There are places along the trail where the canal bed is obvious, but here it is not. The string of lakes here were formed in the 1970's when the Crooked Creek Dam was put in to control flooding. So, I suppose beforehand the river may have originated naturally a little further southeast.
