The city of Irondale(Population: 9 thousand plus developed along the railroad that carried supplies to and from the steel-making city of Birmingham.
The city fame grew from its identity at the setting for the book (later a film) Fried Green Tomatoes, by Irondale native Fannie Flagg.
The story is loosely based around the town and the landmark Irondale Cafe, known as The WhistleStop Cafe in the book & film. Irondale is also the location of Catholic radio/television broadcaster EWTN.
