Train E243 / Train L533 Collision

Southbound Train 533 failed to stop at siding and collided with the northbound Train 243 killing the engineer and conductor. The probably cause of the collision was fatigue due to untreated sleep apnea for the engineer and conductor of train 533.

On November 15, 2001 at 6:15 A.M. 29 miles east of here at the Andersonville siding M.P. 37.5 on the Holly subdivision, Train E243 enroute from Flatrock, MI to Flint, MI collided with Train L533 that was bound for Detroit, MI.
Killed were Engineer Tom Landris of Durand and Conductor Gary Chase of Owosso.
Engineer Landris and Conductor Chase were two professional and respected members of our railroad family.
We will cherish our memories of them and remember the tragic events of that day forever.
