Like its New York City counterpart, Manhattan, Illinois has a central business district, a train station, and a Times Square. Oops, sorry, that is "Time Square."
Although the original Manhattan has Dutch history, this Manhattan celebrates its Irish roots with an Irish Fest during the first weekend in March.
Like many communities in this area, Manhattan is growing rapidly. The rural village had 3,330 people according to the 2000 Census, but the population has nearly doubled to 6,118 based on a Census estimate for 2006. With all this growth, perhaps this Manhattan will have a building taller than 2 stories soon. Nah! Probably not.
The sign pictured is located on the eastern side of town.
