Weather data at Fernbank is measured from two locations, the tower on the roof of Fernbank Science Center and the tower in Fernbank forest. The roof instruments were purchased from RainWise and measure wind speed, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity, rainfall and pressure. The roof data is displayed in the lab, but is no longer logged. The RainWise data was logged hourly from May 17, 1994 - Oct. 31, 1997.
The instruments on the forest tower were purchased from Inter-Mountain Laboratories. The forest tower data is being logged hourly as of Dec. 1, 1997.
The Fernbank forest tower is instrumented with weather sensors at several levels above the ground and a soil thermometer 2 inches below the ground. The tower is located at lat. 33° 46.587' N, lon. 84° 19.369' W, with an elevation at the base of the tower of approximately 970 ft above sea level. The data is displayed in real-time and average values for each hour are logged. The weather elements measured are wind speed (mph), wind direction (deg), temperature (°F), relative humidity (%), solar radiation (watts/m2), precipitation (inches), pressure (millibars) and soil temperature (°F). The levels are 42, 21, 10, 2 and 1 meter(s) above the ground. The forest canopy is near the 21 m height.
The weather sensors at each level are as follows:
- 42 m (138 ft): speed, direction, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and precipitation.
- 21 m (69 ft): speed, direction, temperature, relative humidity and solar radiation.
- 10 m (33 ft): speed and direction.
- 2 m (6 ft): temperature, relative humidity and solar radiation.
- 1 m (3 ft): precipitation and pressure (the rain gauge is 3 m away from tower base).
- 0.05 m (2 in): soil temperature.
The waymark coordinates are for the forest tower and from my GPSr and where plus or minus 18 feet. Close to those on the Fernbank website. The base of the tower is enclosed by a fence. I imaging theirs are more precise and probably the center of the tower.
Admission to Fernbank Science Center is free of charge.
Parking is free of charge.
The gate to the Fernbank forest closes at 5:00 pm.
