At about 4:00pm on a cold January 9th, 1997 29 people perished in a field while on approach to Detroit's Metropolitan Airport on a flight from Cincinnati/Covington, KY.
The NTSB determination of probable cause of this accident "was the FAA’s failure to establish adequate aircraft certification standards for flight in icing conditions" and the "FAA’s failure to require the establishment of adequate minimum airspeeds for icing conditions"
A contributing factor was "flightcrew’s decision to operate in icing conditions near the lower margin of the operating airspeed envelope (with flaps retracted), and Comair’s failure to establish and adequately disseminate unambiguous minimum airspeed values for flap configurations and for flight in icing conditions."
A memorial to Comair 3272 is located within Roselawn Memorial Park, south of Monroe at N41 51.614 W83 27.261.

Date of Crash: 01/09/1997
Aircraft Model: Embraer EMB 120RT Brasilia
Military or Civilian: Civilian
Tail Number: N265CA
Cause of Crash: The NTSB determined that the likely cause was ice build up on the lifting surfaces, which reduced the lift of the aircraft. The lack of lift was compounded by the aircraft being operating at the lower end of the airspeed envelope without the use of flaps. Ice built up more on one side during the critical approach phase, which caused the plane to spiral nosefirst into the ground 18 miles from its destination.
