Allan Gipson, a pioneer settler of Franklin County (1814), lived in the St. Andrews area where he serviced the coal trains that came up the mountain to Gipson's Switch. A benefactor of the University of the South, Gipson donated a large tract of land to the Sewanee Domain. Gipson served in the Tennessee Mounted Infantry during the Cherokee War.
