Ever wondered, which European capital has the most namesakes in the new world? There are six places called Madrid, seven called London; eight Stockholms, twelve Moscows, thirteen Warsaws, fourteen Dublins and sixteen Lisbons. Rome is on the American map eighteen times, Vienna registeres twenty hits and Geneva and Paris can be found twenty one times each. Athens showed up in our search twenty four times, but the winner is...

Berlin

The picture to the left was taken at the Berlin City Limits at Glienicke Bridge.

A total of thirty two towns, villages and townships in the United States are named after the German capital. The largest one is Berlin, CT with almost 20,000 inhabitants, the smallest one is a township in North Dakota, home to 35 people. Altogether, a total of 93,000 people lives in the 32 Berlins in 18 different states.

Below is a list of all Berlins in the US. Click on the county to get the details or check out ePodunk for all listings.

P.S.: Counting all European cities, not only capitals, the most commonly named place would be Manchester with 36 hits, but that is not a capital. Besides, counting all the other towns named Berlin in Canada, Brazil, Ecuador, Australia and South Africa and a volcano in Antarctica, the German capital would still be the winner.

Let me know if you find a town with more hits!
