This figure of a mother and youngster leaving a toddler's grave site evokes a great deal of empathy for those who left homes, friends, neighbors, and familiar surroundings to journey through treacherous territory in search of a place free of religious persecution. Many lost part or all of their family during the trek. Particularly poignant is the grave marker, comprised of a baby's bonnet placed atop a wooden post.
