Battle of Alamance


On May 16, 1771, North Carolina militia, commanded by Royal Governor William Tryon, defeated the Regulators on this site. The pennants represent the second, or decisive, positions of the two armies and the Regulator camp.

This historical marker is located at the State Historic Site Visitor Center at Alamance Battleground in Burlington. It was erected in 1971.

The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources has an essay on the Battle of Alamance. A nearby marker (GG-1) contains a more detailed account of the Battle of Alamance. More information about the battle can also be found on the Wikipedia article about the battle.

This marker is located at the back of the Alamance Battleground visitor center. From the marker, visitors have a nice view of the battlefield, where the lines of both the militia and the Regulators are clearly visible.
