William Wood (1773-1851), native of Virginia, was a founder of Cumberland and a leader in Clinton Co. He represented Cumberland Co. (when Clinton was part of it) in the General Assembly for 23 years. One of the founders of Clear Fork Baptist Church, first in Clinton County. Wood served with distinction in the War of 1812; commissioned brevet major.
