Fort Worden is one of three forts located at the mouth of the Puget Sound. Together with Fort Casey and Fort Flagler, the three were dubbed the "triangle of fire" and were used to protect the Bremerton Naval Shipyard and Boeing B-52 Bomber production plant from enemy attack during WWII. Japanese subs had fired on Fort Stevens at the mouth of the Columbia River and there was concern they would try to access the Puget Sound.

From early on it was deemed important to protect this entrance to the Sound. The forts were built in the late 1800's and were active until the mid to late 1950's.

In the late 1950's the fort was deactivated and sold to the state of Washington to be used as a youth detention center. In 1971 the center closed and the fort was turned into a State Park. Within the park is the Point Wilson lighthouse, the barracks (one is a hostel and the rest are rented out for retreats and camps), the officer housing (now available as vacation rentals), 15 batteries to explore, an aquarium, 3 historic museums, beach front and boat ramps, camping and RVing, and miles of trails.

Fort Worden has been designated a National Historic Landmark, as well as a Registered Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
