The “Dictator” is a 13 inch Sea Coast Mortar used by the Union forces in the siege of Petersburg, VA during the American Civil War. The Mortar could fire a 225 pound exploding shell up to 2 miles and took 14 pounds of black power.
The siege of Petersburg lasted nine and one-half month from June 1864 - April 1865. The "Dictator" fired 218 rounds at Petersburg.
A replica of the “Dictator” is located at the Eastern Front Visitor Center along the walking trail at the visitor’s center.
