The Tiger was sculpted by Maria Kirby-Smith in honor of her father Colonel Edmund Kirby-Smith, son of Confederate General Edmund Kirby-Smith. The mascot was donated in 1995.

The tiger is has one paw smashing a football while standing on a book, which represents the schools long athletic and academic history.
