Since opening in 2004, Childress Vineyards have piqued the curiosity of native North Carolinians and captured the interest of the wine industry. The Italian architecture brings old world style to the new south. The winery boasts of extensive facilities, including a tasting room and shop, banquets areas, a restaurant and small lake (complete with elegant black swans). These are nestled in 100 acres of vineyards where 12 old world varietals are planted. This is a large scale winery! The wines are made with 50% of the grapes grown locally and the remainder from other sources. The tasting room is adorned with national awards won by this winery. There is also memorabilia related to the owner's sponsorship and prior profession in NASCAR. What an interesting and fascinating combination of interests! The winery features music in the vineyard during the summer and fall months. During our visit they were preparing for a late Sunday afternoon wedding on the lawn.
