Richard Thurman, Sr. is thought to have been born in the year 1743 and was known to his friends as “Uncle” Thurman. Mr. Thurman served with distinction during the Revolutionary War and was personal friends with both General George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette. He was devoted Methodists, serving for many years as a church elder. Richard “Uncle” Thurman died in Lynchburg, Virginia on August 14, 1830 at the age of 87. He is buried in Lynchburg’s Old City Cemetery.
