This marker has a short history of the first railroad built west of the Allegheny Mountains in 1833. It was absorbed by other railroads in 1898.

West of Allegheny Mountains - Tuscumbia, Courtland & Decatur RR.


Built 1833 to by-pass shoals in Tenn. River. Absorbed by Memphis & Charleston And by Southern Rwy. In 1898.

Erected 1952 by Alabama Historical Association.

Addtional Information::
Located in Decatur, AL. The Old State Bank is across the street and the area is full of history, including a Civil War Battle in Decatur in 1864 where general Hood tried to cut off general Sherman's supply route.
