Carter Glass was born on January 4, 1858 in Lynchburg, Virginia. As a member of the U. S. House of Representatives he served as Chairman of the House Committee on Banking and Currency during which time he worked wit President Woodrow Wilson on the development of the Federal Reserve Act. In 1918, President Wilson appointed him Secretary of the Treasury. He served as Treasury Secretary until 1920 when he was appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacance caused by the death of Senator Thomas S. Martin.

In 1942, Senator Glass began suffering from a number age-related illnesses, and he did not attend Senate meetings after that time. However, he refused to resign despite many requests to do so, and even kept his committee chairmanship. Many visitors were also kept from him by his wife. Senator Glass died in Washington, DC, on May 28, 1946 of congestive heart failure. He is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, VA.

Carter Glass was instramental in developing the Federal Reserve Act while serving as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives. He served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Woodrow Wilson and was a member of the United States Senate from 1920 until his death in 1946. In 1923 he build “Montview” on his farm in Lynchburg. Montview is today known as the Carter Glass Mansion and is today located on the campus of Liberty University. The Carter Glass Mansion now serves as Liberty University’s Administration Building. In May 2007, Jerry Falwell who founded Liberty University was buried on the grounds of the Carter Glass Mansion.
