Summertown
Summertown, the first community on Lookout Mountain, was in this general area. The Lookout Mountain Hotel and its cottages were erected here in 1856 by Colonel James A. Whiteside and associates. Guests came up a toll road in carriages which met trains and steamboats in Chattanooga. Confederate and Union troops in turn occupied the hotel in 1863-1864, and Jefferson Davis rested awhile in one of the cottages after release from prison in May, 1867.
