West of this site is the Palm View Cemetery. At the turn of the century, Palm View was a sparsely settled community of small family farms. Residents grew tomatoes, peppers and citrus on the rich hammock lands. As the community grew, more land was needed in the cemetery, and Mead Smith donated additional ground. Dr. J.J. Dean, one of the first doctors in Manatee County was buried there as well as many of Palm View's early settlers and their descendents.
