The Church of the Deposition of the Robe was the private chapel of the metropolitans and patriarchs, the higher members of the church hierarchy. It was built in 1484, tucked in between the Faceted and Terem palaces, next to the west door of the massive Assumption Cathedral. The name is derived from a Byzantine Feast day celebrating the arrival in Constantinople of a robe supposed to have belonged to the Virgin Mary.
It has a single gold dome and characteristic gables. In the photo, the assemblage of domes with colored columns are on the roof of the Terem Palace.
