Sign reads: "On November 28, 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark arrived in Kaskaskia with about twenty-four men. Here they recruited twelve more soldiers from the local fort, including Patrick Gass, and John Ordway. They obtained a second piroque and hired French boatmen to help move their boats up river. They also hired an additional interpreter, Francois Labiche."
