Wetzel State Recreation Area - Michigan - State/Provincial Parks on Waymarking.com

Wetzel SRA is Macomb County's only State Park. It offers hiking, hunting, bird watching, snowmobiling (with 4" of snow minimum.No biking, horses or wheeled motorized vehicles are permitted in the park.

Within Wetzel's 900+ acres there are 2.8 miles of maintained trails and about 6.5 miles of primitive trails to explore and 120+ acres of wetlands holding an incredible amount of wildlife. Coon Creek bisects the park adding yet another ecosystem. Parking and toilets are available. A Michigan State Park sticker may soon be required for entry.

Park Type: Day Use Activities: Trails, hiking, snowmobiling (4" minimum), hunting, picnicing Background: The park was named after PFC Walter Cline Wetzel who was awarded (post-partum) the Congressional Medal of Honor during WWII. He saved his platoon by throwing himself on a live grenade. The land for the park was purchased in the late 60's. The state developed a master plan for Wetzel that included a state-of-the-art shooting range, nature center and campground but never got the funding needed. The land sat vacant for more than 35 years. Mitigation wetlands were contracted at Wetzel in 2005 which also paid for many other upgrades.
