Originally opened October 9, 1924 as "Municipal Grant Park Stadium" with a capacity of 74,000, the name was changed to Soldier Field in November 11, 1925. For years the stadium was used for various sporting events, including NASCAR races, the 1927 Jack Dempsey-Gene Tunney championship fight, various high school and football games. The Bears moved in September 1971.
In 2003 the stadium was completely renovated with only a few reminders of its original Greco-Roman architecture, causing it to be de-listed from the National Register of Historic Places and the loss of its National Historic Landmark designation. The new stadium, sometimes called the "NEW Soldier Field" is a whirl of architectural design. The reduction of seating to only 61,500 shows the value of the new corporate skyboxes added.
